BSc (Med), MBBS, GAICD, MBA (Exec) Excellence, FRANZCO Dr Shanel Sharma is a leading Sydney ophthalmologist specialising in cataract surgery, retinal eye diseases, paediatric ophthalmology, and strabismus (squint) for adults and children. Born in Wollongong and educated at Ascham School, Dr Sharma studied Medicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) before completing her ophthalmology training at Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Childrens Hospital. She later held the prestigious Professorial Senior Registrar position at Sydney Eye Hospital. Dr Sharma undertook advanced fellowships in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital and Western Eye Hospital in London. During her time in the UK, she also worked as a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at St Marys Hospital and in medical retina clinics, where she performed intravitreal injections for retinal disease. In Australia, Dr Sharma has served as a Consultant at Sydney Eye Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She is accredited to provide Botox treatment for eye conditions such as strabismus, hemifacial spasm, and blepharospasm. She is also a Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist, helping pilots and air traffic controllers meet CASA vision standards. Alongside her clinical work, Dr Sharma has published more than 20 peer-reviewed research papers and is actively involved in medical education. She has been a Conjoint Lecturer at UNSW between 2003 and 2015, at the University of Sydney between 2006 and 2019. She also contributed to the profession as an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) for a term of 6 years.
